Age in Place Initiative: Supporting Korean-Speaking Seniors in Our Community
At BrossCare Health, we are committed to ensuring that seniors in our community have the support they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives. Our latest initiative, the Age in Place Initiative, focuses on Korean-speaking seniors living in affordable housing in Burnaby, British Columbia. Through this Community Outreach Program, we provide essential services that address key challenges seniors face in accessing health care, social support, and daily living assistance.
How We Support Seniors
We recognize the unique barriers that many Korean-speaking seniors experience, such as difficulty navigating the health care system, financial limitations, and language barriers. To help bridge these gaps, we offer:
Health Education Seminars – BrossCare hosts bi-weekly educational seminars on topics like diabetes, dementia, COPD, and other critical health concerns relevant to seniors. These sessions are led by our team and volunteer guest speakers, including dental hygienists, physiotherapists, and registered nurses.
Community Building & Meal Support – To foster a sense of belonging, we provide a meal at the end of each seminar, ensuring seniors can enjoy a warm, nutritious meal while socializing with others.
Access to Specialized Services – We connect seniors to health professionals seniors may otherwise be unable to access due to language barriers, limited knowledge on available resources, or financial constraints. The health professionals we work with conduct assessments, answer questions, and offer guidance on medical and non-medical needs.
In-Home Support – Our program offers free in-home visits to seniors with the greatest need, where paid CareAides assist with laundry, cleaning, and household maintenance. Registered nurses also visit seniors who require medical guidance or check-ins.
Addressing System Navigation Challenges – Many seniors struggle to access resources due to language barriers. We help seniors navigate the system and connect them with essential local services.
Technology Assistance – Volunteers assist seniors with tasks such as learning how to use the social apps, using FaceTime, using AI platforms, and managing their digital needs.
